Male Hairy Woodpecker. The red at the back of the head indicates that this is a male.

Male Downy Woodpecker. The Downy is about 1/2 the size of the Hairy and has a shorter beak compared to its head size than a Hairy.

Pine Siskin. Pine Siskins are Goldfinch sized birds that come down from up north to spend the winter with us. They also often hang around the feeders with the Goldfinches.

Sandhill Cranes on a grey cold day in the backwaters of the Mississippi near New Albin, Iowa. There are about 200 Tundra Swans just south of Brownsville, Mn-the big push is yet to come.

For years we have kept track of events such as the arrival of the first Hummingbird or the blooming of the first Marsh Marigold. We have now begun to photograph these events and felt others may be interested in what we run into in our "nature wanderings".
